Officials identified two Marines killed in a horrible truck accident near Camp Lejeune, North Carolina on Wednesday, January 19, 2022.
The victims were identified as Lance Cpl. Jonathan E. Gierke, 19, of Lawrenceville, Georgia; and PFC Zachary W. Riffle, 18, of Kingwood, West Virginia. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene on Wednesday.
Two other Marines remain in the hospital in stable condition as a result of the accident and a third is hospitalized at Camp Lejeune. Officials state that over a dozen Marines were in a truck when it made a right turn on a highway, lost control, and overturned. At least 17 were injured.
A second military truck traveled behind the first one that overturned. The second truck was unable to stop in time and struck one of the ejected passengers.
This by all means appears to have been a preventable accident.
